Shameless season 9 episode 5 preview: Frank’s side effects and more
Going into this installment, one of the biggest things that you can anticipate is seeing Frank in a tough spot due, in part, to his new liver medication. We’re going to see him struggle with that, not that the idea of struggle is altogether new to a guy like him. This is just a stranger one than usual for him.
As for everyone else in the Gallagher family, they’ve got some of their own issues to deal with. Take, for example, Debbie trying to sort things out with Alex and then also Ian looking to find some of his own independence. This is a guy who certainly hasn’t had a lot of that in recent memory. While he has also had the gay Jesus movement, that in itself may feel restrictive at times due to the fame of it all.

Frank’s new liver medication comes with tragic side effects. Ian tries to get away from Fiona’s hovering. Lip has to keep himself occupied during a day of temptation. Carl makes a connection at a West Point mixer. Debbie tries to repair things with Alex.

One of the most interesting things about this particular season, at least from the outside looking in, is just how Showtime is scheduling them in two batches of seven rather than the full season all at once. Because of this, you do have to wonder whether or not we’re going to see this arc move along a little bit faster than we are used to. After all, episode 7 may feel at least somewhat like a finale … even if it’s not one.
