Saturday Night Live cold open: Matt Damon is Brett Kavanaugh
Well, as it turns out, they had a rather famous celebrity in Matt Damon stop by in order to play another notable person in Brett Kavanaugh. In some ways, it was rather surprising to see Damon play this part, mostly because there were a number of other cast member who could have taken on this part instead. Why not have a cast member do it? We do understand that Damon = headlines, but this was a subject of criticism during season 43. We do think that Damon did a good job, and we understand the casting given that he did bear a certain physical similarity to Kavanaugh with the right wig. Beyond that, though, the entire sketch did everything that it could in order to heighten the crazy and spoof the Supreme Court confirmation hearings from this past week … which certainly felt infuriating to many at times.

For those of you who do love cameos from former cast members, you did have that in the form of Rachel Dratch, who stopped by as one of the Senators at the hearing.
The one problem that this cold open suffers from is that everything in real life is so shocking and over-the-top that it’s really hard to top it with a sketch on this show. We do think that this will get headlines and cause a lot of discussion on social media, but is that going to prove to be enough to please people on the fence about recent SNL political cold opens? That is probably up for debate. Given that it’s been a few months since we at last saw one, at least we didn’t suffer from political overkill through much of this.
