Outcast season 3: Is there a chance that it could ever happen?
We’ve covered hundreds of ratings / renewal situations for quite some time, but the one surrounding the Robert Kirkman comic adaptation is clearly one of the most bizarre. Outcast season 2 aired on Cinemax this summer, without much fanfare, and many months after it originally premiered overseas. This is a quality series, one that is terrifying at times but also just gloriously dark at others.
Unfortunately, we can’t say that we are entirely optimistic about a third season. For starters, it only averaged a little over 100,000 live viewers on Cinemax for season 2 — while ratings expectations on this network aren’t necessarily through the roof, this is a hefty drop from the show’s season 1 averages. Also, the contracts for the cast expired quite a while ago, in part because it took so long for season 2 to premiere. While you can never say never when it comes to bringing a show back, it would take a lot of legwork for something to happen here. It is also a fairly expensive show to make, which it is in part why it was an international co-production (as this helped out when it comes to financing).
At the moment, we would just say to be happy for the pair of seasons that we had for this dark, incredibly-unique addition to the TV library. There are not going to be many other shows that you get a chance to see that are quite like it and we’re certainly going to miss it if this is the end. We are still happy about the fact that we got to see a couple of seasons of this in the first place, especially on a network that didn’t edit down content or try to make it into something that it’s not.
