Saturday Night Live: Expectations for Adam Driver – Kanye West show

Saturday Night LiveTonight’s season 44 premiere of Saturday Night Live is right around the corner, and it already feels very clear that there is a good bit to anticipate. After all, Adam Driver is coming on board to host, while Kanye West is set to appear as the musical guest.

For Driver himself, we do have some high hopes given that he has hosted before, he knows the show well, and he’s going to probably get some of the crazier ideas that the writers have given that they’ve had months to think about them. While there are some ambitious swings sometimes during SNL premieres, they are also at the same time unfocused because not everyone has rebuilt some of the chemistry yet. While we anticipate some funny ideas and creative sketches, rarely is the premiere the best show of the season. We wouldn’t anticipate this being an exceptionally memorable episode save for maybe a few sketches — though Driver may be able to lift some of the material.

As for Kanye, the fact that he is wearing a MAGA hat in the promo below tells you much of what you need to know here. He’s always been a provocative performer, and this is some of what we anticipate from him moving into the episode tonight. Whether it is political or not, you have to go ahead and assume that he will do something to generate discussion. One of the more interesting things about his presence tonight is that he was not the first choice for the premiere; it was recently confirmed via Lorne Michaels that Ariana Grande was originally set to be the musical guest, but she dropped out due to emotional reasons. She has had an emotional past month stemming from the death of her ex Mac Miller. She is engaged to cast member Pete Davidson, so we do anticipate her coming at some point this season.
