This weekend marks the 100th episode of Shameless and that is certainly a big thing to celebrate. It’s not often that you have a chance to see a premium-cable show end up being on the air for this long. After all, most cable shows have relatively short runs with relatively short seasons.
How did Shameless really make it here? A big part of the credit has to go to some of the dedicated fans out there for sticking with this show through thick and thin and through all of the crazy twists that you happened to see over time. The Gallaghers are a weird, wacky group, but there is something super-endearing about them even still and you do want to feel like you are a part of this world. That’s one of the things that the writers have done a great job at — bringing you into this group and figuring out a way for you to feel like you have a second home watching this family and all of their weird hijinks.
So how much life is really left after the 100th episode? That is another interesting thing to ponder at the moment. We know that Emmy Rossum is leaving at the end of season 9, but it feels like the cast is going to continue to some degree. We think that a season 10 seems likely, and if the cast is interested, maybe a season 11 comes after that. We don’t necessarily foresee a 200th episode down the line, but depending on how the first few episodes without Rossum are perceived (if there is a season 10), that will be the real litmus test for whatever the future of the show is. We just hope that there is a chance to test that out if that’s what the writers want.
