Grey’s Anatomy season 15 episode 1 review: Amelia, Owen’s future; Jo’s realization

Grey's Anatomy season 14

Grey’s Anatomy season 15 episode 1 arrived on ABC Thursday night with a number of big stories, and also a little bit of humor.

For Meredith Grey, this was one of the funnier stories that we’ve had a chance to see from her as she started to ponder over her dating future. She was having dreams about sleeping with DeLuca, she dealt with a patient who was very curious about her romantic life, and she also had to navigate the awkwardness of the finale kiss. She had a lot to think about and we’re not sure that she really came to a conclusion as to precisely what she wanted to do.

When it comes to Amelia and Owen, however, we feel like we saw her being a little bit more decisive. She decided, thanks to some conversations with Tom of all people, that she didn’t need to shy away from her feelings. If she loves him, she needs to just admit that she does. There isn’t anything wrong with that. She told him the truth, they kissed, and that’s where the first episode ended. They have some other issues that they’re going to have to take on here, mostly due to the fact that Teddy is around, she’s pregnant, and she hasn’t said anything about it just yet.

Yet, for Maggie we cannot say that the news was anywhere near as good. She completely freaked out when Jackson talked about his faith — and, in turn, potentially marrying her. It wasn’t a full-fledged proposal, but at the same time there were many elements that still felt like a proposal. That is something that they are going to have to contend with.

On the medical side of things…

Jo ironically used some of her honeymoon with Alex to figure out a new specialty that she wanted to take on, which is exciting in terms of her medical future. She knows what she wants to do for a specialty, which is certainly encouraging given the fact that she would end up having to go to Boston otherwise.

Meanwhile, we have a real debate as to who is going to take on a new chief position at the hospital — there are certainly people who want it, at least other than new character Ortho God Link, who seems more than happy to just be there, do his job, and not have to take on too much else.

CarterMatt Verdict

Given that there have been so many different serious episodes on Grey’s Anatomy over the years, we’re rather happy that this premiere offered up so much fun for some characters … though there are some reasons to worry about other characters.
