The upcoming America’s Got Talent spin-off America’s Got Talent: The Champions has a new host.
Today, NBC confirmed that Terry Crews, who stars on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and has a host of other credits in the hosting / actor space, is going to serve as the emcee for the winter edition of the reality series. Filming begins this week, which suggests to us that this show will not have a public vote in the same way that the flagship series does when you get to the very end of the season. Crews is replacing Tyra Banks, who hosts the summer edition of the show, and the judging panel of Howie Mandel, Simon Cowell, Mel B, and Heidi Klum remains the same. We’re a little bit disappointed that there is no international judge from another edition of the show on board, mostly because that’s something that we put in our video wishlist for the season. Watch that below, and be sure to subscribe to get some other TV updates.
In a statement, here is what Crews had to say on the subject of coming on board the spin-off:
“I am so proud and honored to join Simon, Mel, Heidi and Howie in hosting the No. 1 alternative series on television. NBC’s America’s Got Talent is a show I love to watch with my family and now to actually be a part of this special edition, The Champions, is more than I could have asked or dreamed. Now America’s Got Terry Crews!”
As for whether or not Crews hosting means anything as of right now for the summer shows, we wouldn’t bank on it — hosting AGT is a really difficult job since you mostly just have to keep the ship going in the right direction and you don’t have a lot of time to mix things up and add a little more fun. We would like to see Terry get a little bit more interactive with the acts, which is something that Nick Cannon probably did a better job at than Tyra — who we do think is underrated just because reality-TV hosting is often a thankless job.
