Moving through the rest of Empire season 5 following the events of the premiere, it seems as though the coffin is going to be the mystery. We saw this hyped up over the course of the pre-season, and much of the assumption was that the coffin reveal would come in the premiere.
However, that didn’t turn out to be the case. The coffin reveal is actually for months down the line — Eddie is gone, but he wasn’t in that coffin! We’re going to be left waiting to see precisely what happens with a key death down the road. It’s difficult to spell this out in words, but we almost want to lose a big character to justify this hype, even if we don’t want to lose someone because we care about most of the main cast.
Speaking in a new postmortem with TVLine, executive producer Brett Mahoney had the following to say about the development of this big mystery over the course of the remainder of the season.
The mystery will play out the entire season. We will know who is in the coffin by the [finale]. The flash-forwards will play intermittently as we move through the season and provide puzzle pieces [to the mystery].
Basically, you’re going to be waiting for a while to get any sort of resolution here and that’s just something that we all have to prepare for as Empire viewers. Of course, it feels in part like this twist is really strengthened by a possible season 6 renewal, given that otherwise the death doesn’t have as much meaning if the show ends right afterwards. (We do, luckily, feel good about the renewal odds here.)
Who do you think is in the coffin moving into Empire season 5, and what do you think about the twist? Be sure to share right now in the attached comments!
