Chicago Med season 4 premiere review: Someone leaves; someone stays
A lot of times with shows like this, you see the writers could up with a way to move past the cliffhanger in a fairly limited period of time. Sometimes, they don’t really matter all that much. That’s not the case here, as the writers set out in order to ensure that the Dr. Charles – Dr. Reese cliffhanger actually mattered … albeit in a sad way.

If you remember, Dr. Charles decided to not tell Dr. Reese about everything that was going on with her father being a serial killer. Why? In his mind, he was doing this out of a desire to protect her. Yet, she couldn’t forgive him for the intrusion and the deception. That’s what caused her to depart, knowing that she could finish her training at another hospital. Dr. Charles had to move on as well, but unfortunately we saw him take out some of his anger on the new interns who arrived to the hospital — and also Dr. Choi for his oversight.
In moving on to some other characters, there is clearly still some tension around Ethan and April’s relationship — in part because of everything that has been happening with his sister Emily. That situation remains a mess, and we don’t think that this is going to change in the near future.
Meanwhile, the good news here is that Will and Natalie are engaged — yet, that doesn’t mean that this is the end of their struggles. They have some other issues that they are going to be dealing with, and that includes them trying to figure out where exactly to get married and how it will happen. These are better issues for them to have than whether or not they will actually get married in the first place, but wedding preparation is a major stress on any couple.
As for Dr. Rhodes, have no fear — the character is sticking around for a good while moving forward. He is being gifted a new OR within the ED, something that is going to enable him to practice some revolutionary medicine without having to go to the Mayo Clinic to do it. Also, this also does mean that he and Dr. Bekker could still have a future to some degree.

CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, the Chicago Med season 4 premiere delivered on a number of different fronts. It was emotional at times, but also really sad at others since we love Sarah Reese and don’t want to imagine the show without her. Yet, sometimes departures just happen, and we’re at least glad that Rhodes isn’t joining her out the door.
