Why would Ellen Pompeo leave Grey’s Anatomy — if she ever does?

Meredith Grey

There have been some headlines around a possible end for Grey’s Anatomy characters, mostly because of comments that Ellen Pompeo made. The actress said recently that following the end of season 16 (which has not been officially ordered yet), she could decide to leave.

Why? In part, Pompeo believes that many of the important stories for her character could be told by that point. With that being said, though, there is a little bit more to it. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, she dived further into the subject of everything that she wants to pursue — including as both a producer and a mother:

“…I’m really excited to do some new things, it’s about time that I mix it up and I’m really excited about my producing career, and I’m definitely looking for a change. My children are getting older so I want to be more available to them now. I can’t be an absentee mom if they’re teenagers, I have to be around to whip their butts. So it’s definitely time for change in my life. I’m really looking forward to it and that’s the beauty of my situation. I have definitely played this out for everything that I possibly could. I’ve given it 200 percent of my energy and my love and my time and my commitment and my dedication. I still am fighting every day to make everything surrounding this show, the quality of the show, the storytelling, I’m still fighting for everything I can, for the quality to be good, for the actors to be happy, whether that’s well received or not. I still care very much about the show and I think that it takes a lot of energy. So at some point I have to wrap it up.”

From a parenting standpoint, there is actually a pretty clear parallel between what Pompeo says here and what Andrew Lincoln said was a motivating factor for leaving The Walking Dead — as his kids get older, it’s harder to keep moving them around.

It’s ultimately hard to imagine Grey’s Anatomy without Meredith Grey, but we also recognize that this is a subject we can look at a little bit more a year from now. It’s a fool’s errand to spend too much time right now assuming how anyone will feel at this point when season 16 is getting set to premiere. You can expect that it could be the final season of the show, but we wouldn’t say that anything is a guarantee at the moment.
