NCIS season 16 ratings expectations: Should we expect a decline?

NCIS season 16 episode 1

Moving into NCIS season 16, what should we be expecting in terms of the ratings? That is the focus of this very piece!

We know that there’s an innate curiosity when it comes to NCIS and its ratings, and there has been for quite some time. Ultimately, this is what happens when you’ve won the title of most-watched show in the world and there was an era where this series was generating more than 20 million live viewers an episode. That era is long gone for a number of different reasons, whether it be cast departures or the natural fatigue that comes with a show being on this long. In addition to all of this, you also have to remember for a minute here that we’re in a different era now where shows like NCIS have to compete against Netflix and other streaming options. More and more people are learning that TV can be so much more fun when it’s at their own schedule rather than a network’s. (Personally, we do still like the old-school habit of watching TV live.)

In thinking specifically about the NCIS season 16 premiere, we’re expecting the show to perform fairly solid, given the fact that it’s been off the air for a rather long time. Last year, we saw the show draw a 1.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and, to go along with it, almost 13.3 million viewers. This is a nice draw, and these are slightly better numbers than what we saw for the rest of the season as a whole.

We do expect a decline for two different reasons. First, the show lost Abby last year and there are inevitably going to be some viewers who depart as a result of that. Also, it’s natural for shows these days to lose 10-15% of their audience year to year. Our feeling is that if NCIS brings in a 1.4 rating in the demo and over 12 million viewers for the premiere, CBS will be more than pleased. Heck, they’d probably take a 1.3 and over 11.5 million, which is close to where it was for some episodes in the spring.
