Saturday Night Live season 44: Ego Nwodim set to be new featured player

Saturday Night Live

While there aren’t any huge changes for Saturday Night Live season 44, there is a new featured player in Ego Nwodim.

NBC announced on Friday that Nwodim, who has appeared on Living Biblically and Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, will be around for this season. Like many other featured players turned cast members on SNL, she has an improv background. She’s been a part of UCB in Los Angeles and even had a one-woman show there entitled “Great Black Women … and Then There’s Me.” She feels like a good fit for the cast, but this is one of those things that is sometimes hard to gauge in advance. Luke Null entering last season felt like a good addition, but he never broke through on the show. That’s why he was the one featured player / cast member to depart over the past few months. Otherwise, SNL has the exact same cast coming back.

Related Alec Baldwin will return as Donald Trump … though perhaps not as frequently

The premiere episode of the series is next weekend, which is going to feature an appearance from Adam Driver as host and Kanye West as the musical guest. We’re still not sure how we feel about the latter at the moment…

Anyhow, we’re excited for the new season, but we also do enter it with somewhat low expectations given that premiere episodes are rarely the best ones that SNL does in it’s season. While in theory, you’d think that they would be great since there’s so much time that the cast has in order to assemble material, it often does take a little bit of time for the chemistry to reset and everyone to get into a groove working together. We don’t anticipate too much of Nwodim in the opening episodes of the season, mostly because it’s rare that featured players get a ton of airtime right away.
