Chicago Med season 4 on set: Will Dr. Latham still be around?

Dr. Latham

Going into Chicago Med season 4, we of course had a number of different questions … but there are some that cannot be answered until after the premiere airs. After all, we had some pretty big cliffhangers at the end of season 3!

One thing that we can discuss though, is the status of one Dr. Latham, played by Ato Essandoh on the series. He’s one of our favorite recurring characters, especially since he’s so different from almost every character we’ve seen in between his autism and his faith. He’s a welcome presence any time he shows up, but moving into season 4, it’s clear that it is going to be difficult to see him on a regular basis. Essandoh is now a regular on the midseason series The Code, and given that this series airs on a rival network in CBS, that makes it all the more challenging to see him pop up on a frequent basis.

Rest assured, that there are no plans to write Dr. Latham out of the series, even if he’s not appearing on Chicago Med all that often. We’d keep our eyes peeled for him in at least one episode, but in the words of executive producer Diane Frolov (which she passed along to CarterMatt at One Chicago Day), “[Dr. Latham is] there. You may not see him, but he’s there.” Frolov went on to explain to us why including him at this point is a little more difficult than some other guest stars:

“It is difficult with the scheduling because we develop these episodes so far in advance. They take about eight weeks to write. It’s hard, because we have to protect our scripts.”

What she means by this is simply that it’s hard to play out a Dr. Latham story in the event that Essandoh’s schedule changes, and all of a sudden the producers don’t have him anymore when they previously thought that they did.

Fellow EP Andrew Schneider went on to praise Ato as a “great actor” who has “really has embraced this role. He studied autism and he met with people who have it to get a handle on it.”

Basically, it goes without saying, but Essandoh is welcome back anytime all parties involved can find a way to make it work.

Be prepared for Chicago Med season 4 to premiere on NBC come Wednesday, September 26 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.
