Downton Abbey movie now has a release date in America, internationally
If you are eager to check out the Downton Abbey movie, have no fear — you’ll get a chance to come September 2019.
This week, Focus Features confirmed that the movie version of the ITV series (which aired on PBS in America) is going to arrive in North American theaters on Friday, September 20. That is one week after it is going to be released internationally. This is a pretty smart window since the fall tends to be a slower time at theaters and this film may be able to capitalize on a slow market. Downton Abbey is an enormously popular property all over the world so, at the very least, we project that this is going to be at least a moderate hit — if not a larger one, depending on what the reviews are and if there some repeat viewing here.
In a statement discussing the project further, Focus chairman Peter Kujawski had the following to say:
“Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter … We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen next September.”
CarterMatt has made it clear for some time now that we would’ve preferred that Downton Abbey remain a television series, given that we’re not all that much of a fan of something from the TV world moving over to the big screen. There’s a nice sort of symmetry that comes from a TV show deciding to end as a TV show. That isn’t happening here, but we are at least happy to see some of these characters back.
