Emmys 2018 opening: Colin Jost, Michael Che’s monologue; ‘We Solved It’ opening
So how did the opening go this time around? We actually saw two Saturday Night Live cast members on stage in Kenan Thompson and Kate McKinnon before hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost showed up. Their bit tonight was mostly about how, supposedly, we’ve solved Hollywood’s diversity problem … and also sexual harassment in the workplace. There were cameos aplenty from the likes of Sterling K. Brown, Andy Samberg, RuPaul, and others throughout.
This was an ambitious, creative effort … but we cannot say that it was actually delivered too much on hilarity other than with a few fantastic one-liners from Tituss Burgess. It also went on a little bit long. Yet, we do like the Emmys mocking themselves by acting as though Hollywood’s diversity problem was actually solved within a single year just because people like Sandra Oh were nominated.
Michael and Colin’s opening – This was a funny introduction for the most part, largely because it skewered Hollywood, the show’s own ratings, how network TV doesn’t get a lot of nominations, and how shows like This Is Us are really sad. There were also a few jokes about Roseanne’s firing and how Laurie Metcalf being nominated was like “a cop being nominated for a BET Award.”
Was this a controversial opening? Sure, but it wasn’t that controversial. Most of it was fairly straightforward but it was well-received by the audience. The best joke may have been on the spin-off for Atlanta, 15 Miles Outside of Atlanta, that features all-white women calling the cops on the cast of Atlanta.
