We should start off this 9-1-1 season 2 story with this: Don’t be shocked if you never see Connie Britton again as Abby. We don’t want to give too much false hope here for those of you (like us!) who were a huge fan of her and the Abby/Buck relationship.
Yet, it does feel like there are some things still in the works to potentially bring the Nashville alum back for at least one episode after her character departed in the finale. As explained in our video below (subscribe to Cartermatt on YouTube for more updates), Britton only had a one-year deal to be a part of the show and there was never any guarantee that she would be back after that. Britton’s working on some other projects, but given her positive relationship with Ryan Murphy (she recently filmed a return to American Horror Story), it’s not out of the realm of possibility that should could be back. It also could be important for Buck to see her at least one more time to give some closure there since the finale left it open that he may be waiting for her.
Speaking via Entertainment Weekly, Oliver Stark teased that there is a possibility that Britton comes back:
“Buck’s kind of clinging on to [his relationship with Abby] … I know there are rumors that [Connie Britton] is going to come back. They’re still trying to work that out and if that happens, great!”
If it doesn’t happen, we imagine that Buck will find a way to move forward in his own right in due time. We don’t think the writers are going to want him hung up on her for the remainder of this series, especially since we get the sense that 9-1-1 is the sort of show that could last for several years. It was one of the big hits on Fox this past winter, and it may have performed better than anyone even expected it to. Jennifer Love Hewitt is coming on board as the new call-center operator, and she has a very different relationship with Buck: They are siblings. For this character in Maddie, working at a call center is a way to escape an abusive relationship and dive into someone else’s problems.
