Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks Christine Blasey Ford, Brett Kavanaugh

Last Week Tonight

Tonight’s episode of Last Week Tonight certainly had opportunities aplenty to riff on the news of the past couple of weeks. After all, just look at everything that has unfolding! The Administration is still in chaos, there are the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, and there is still news breaking almost by the day. This is the climate that we exist in now given that we feel like there are headlines breaking the very day of the show at this point. Suffice it to say, this was a crazy week.

Tonight’s show, naturally, did open with some more discussions of Kavanaugh and at least some of the first accusations of sexual assault against him — because Last Week Tonight films early in the day, they were not able to show a full picture of accusations with so much breaking tonight. Nonetheless, we do still think that the primary point here was still very clear — it’s a horrifying situation, and there are plenty within the media and political world who are treating this in a very disgusting manner.

Oliver tonight take a close look at how people are viewing Christine Blasey Ford, including using victim-blaming as a tactic to get ahead. Oliver touched on the President’s remarks, other politicians, and how we are gearing up for a pretty big litmus test.

There are some obvious comparisons between this situation and what happened with Anita Hill, who Oliver famously interviewed earlier this year. Oliver tonight showed a small clip of that interview that was cut from the previous show, one where she hoped that things could be different now that we are in a very different era. In the midst of all of the terrible stuff that is going on in the world, we do hope that many take Hill’s words to heart.
