The Flash season 5 spoilers: Grant Gustin on Cicada’s powers, connection to Nora
Whether or not the series decides to stay close to the comic-book iteration of this character remains to be seen, but one thing is 100% clear: This is one of the few meta-human villains who could actually render most of Team Flash useless. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, here’s some of what Grant Gustin had to say on the subject:
“He can dampen other metahuman powers, and we don’t know at first how he’s able to do that. He’s got an edge that no other big bad has ever had. We don’t know who he is. He’s mysterious. He’s just kind of an intimidating, big scary man that can render pretty much all of these metahuman superheroes useless, more or less, in battle … He comes on really hard and fast the first time we meet him, so right away there’s an intimidation factor that’s through the roof, similar to Zoom.”

Executive producer Todd Helbing also notes that Cicada is different from other past villains in that he’s a little more “blue-collar” … whatever that means in this context. Is he just a meta-human who also owns a body shop or something?
One more thing via Gustin: Cicada’s arrival does have something to do with Nora West-Allen, which is probably a given since she would have to be coming back in time with a pretty big reason in mind. If Cicada’s arrival has something to do with a past mistake that she has made, this is going to be a great chance to explore it further.
