America’s Got Talent finalist spotlight: Is Shin Lim the favorite?
When it comes to Lim, the greatest thing that he has going for him can be described in one word: Momentum. When you are a contestant on a show like this, so much of your success is dictated by having your best performances at the right time. He was fantastic in the early rounds, but since hitting the live shows he’s only gotten better and better. His performance in the semifinals is right up there with Courtney Hadwin’s first audition for us as the performance of the whole season.

In terms of his pure craft as a magician, it’s hard to even remotely question him. What Shin can do with close-up magic is bar-none better than any magician we’ve seen on this show, but as it’s also been made clear over the years that being a great magician isn’t just about finding ways to deliver a great illusion. It’s about being able to sell your ability to the audience and Shin does that masterfully. The stage presence on this past episode was on another level — he was completely in his element, and never once felt like he was overwhelmed by the audience or distracted by the noise or the judges. He focused in, sold it to the cameras, and never made a single mistake.
What are his winner odds?
As of right now, we personally have him as the favorite to win, but by a slim margin. Mat Franco showed that magicians can win America’s Got Talent and the buzz following his last performance was off the charts. Yet, he is going to have strong competition and at this point, no single act is a slam dunk to win. He needs to deliver a performance every bit as good as the last one, and also get the right focus and attention from the show itself — that is important.
