Suits season 8 episode 9 review: Samantha vs. Alex; Katrina Bennett’s struggle
Take, for example, that Alex Williams and Samantha Wheeler have no problem going toe-to-toe anytime that an opportunity presents itself to do so. These characters did that tonight due to the return of Gabriel, Samantha’s former client who Alex brought on board earlier this season to get in Robert’s good graces. The relationship between and his ex was messy, and with Samantha representing his ex, all of a sudden we got one of the nastiest battles we’ve seen with the firm fighting itself. This is a battle that also seems to be not over yet, mostly because this is bleeding over into the battle between these two in order to be main partner. That could be resolved next week by them going head to head in a case that could determine main partner.
As for the other main storylines of the night, we saw some significant drama stemming from the death of Frank Gallo, Mike’s former prison nemesis who eventually ended up helping him and Harvey out for the sake of his daughter. Bratton and Gould found a way to strike back at Zane Specter Litt, and what was at first a difficult case between desperate, longstanding rivals became something else entirely when Bratton died of a heart attack after proclaiming that his cancer diagnosis wouldn’t stop him from taking Harvey down.
The most polarizing story that we have tonight is probably the relationship between Katrina Bennett and Brian, who started working under her as an associate after she got her promotion to senior partner. He was very much good at what he does, but the closeness between the two personally was a problem. It’s not the most delightful story in the world to see a story that hints at possible cheating down the road, but it does feel like this is the sort of thing that does happen in law firms when you’ve got people working very long hours. With that in mind, this storyline makes a good deal of sense.
At the moment, nothing physical has happened; yet, it’s clear that Katrina has feelings for Brian and wants to be with him. He’s shot it down to a certain extent, but also hasn’t directly discouraged them spending so much time together at work. We don’t think Katrina is trying to break up Brian’s marriage, though; she’s just lonely and probably feels bad about some of the feelings that she does have.
