American Gods season 2 has more showrunner issues in the midst of production
Many months ago, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were replaced on the series with Jesse Alexander, who had worked with Fuller in the past on Hannibal (one of the greatest shows of all time!).The idea was to also make series author Neil Gaiman more involved in production and all facets of the series, but he has shifted much of his attention to another adaptation of his work in Good Omens over on Starz.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alexander has been effectively moved off most of his primary duties on the series; he hasn’t been fired, but effectively, his role has been dramatically reduced and producing director Chris Byrne and line producer Lisa Kussner are working to finish up the season, which has also seen a number of script rejections and other issues across the board.
How crazy have things gotten? Basically, the cast members themselves have reportedly taken issue with several scripts and there were many changes that had to be made on the fly in order to keep things running smoothly. There have also been a number of delays behind the scenes with production. It’s a bit chaotic to say the least.
In a statement, Starz had the following to say about the series:
“American Gods has a deep and complex mythology and a unique visual style that makes this series one of the most ambitious productions on television, and one that we remain committed to delivering for our audience … We are confident that when the fans get their first look at Season 2 in just a few weeks at New York Comic-Con, they will agree it was worth the wait.”
The biggest problem with American Gods has always been that there are a ton of people who have a really strong vision for what this show should be and how it should look — that of course includes Gaiman, who feels probably the most pressure because this is his work and his original vision.
