The Flash season 5 premiere photos showcase Gridlock, XS
Let’s start, of course, with the person who appears to be the main villain at the heart of the first episode: Gridlock. He’s got a creepy mask, but there isn’t really that much else known about him through the lens of the show.

Yet, does that matter? What we’ve really come to see on The Flash over time is that most villains we see in the first episode are characters who don’t matter all that much in the long-term. (Remember Atom Smasher?) These are people who are there mostly in order to further the story along and introduce the latest iteration of the show. They are never too difficult to defeat, but they are important as a kick-off for everything that comes after the fact.
This season, the big twist is that you’ve got another member of Team Flash and another speedster in Nora West-Allen — who goes by the alter ego of XS. You can see a new photo of her below! We of course have questions as to whether or not Gridlock is tied to her in some shape or form, but for now, the only thing that we can hope is just that there’s a great reason why she is back and it is somehow tied into Cicada and everything else that is going on with the series this year. We don’t want things to be too chaotic with there being a lot of different moving parts all over the place.
