Chicago PD season 6 on set: Marina Squerciati on Burgess, Ruzek’s future

Is there going to be something more for Burgess and Ruzek on Chicago PD season 6? We know that this is a question that has long simmered. The two have a lengthy relationship history, and while there were some updates on the subject throughout season 5, it fell more off the map as we neared the finale. The decision with that, at least at the time, was to keep the focus firmly on the story of Woods and Voight — in the words of showrunner Rick Eid, at the time it didn’t feel “appropriate” to bring in something that was such a deviation of focus from everything else that was going on.

Yet, know that Burzek is not going to be put on the back-burner for too long in season 6 — as for whether or not it is good news, however, remains to be seen. While we were at One Chicago Day this week, Marina Squerciati had the following to say to CarterMatt when we asked if Burgess and Ruzek were going to have more of a story soon:

“That question will be resolved very firmly in episode 3. All will be answered.”

To go along with this, Squerciati also touched on the somewhat-nomadic nature of her character in terms of some of her various partnerships on the show. She spent some of her time, after all, with Olinsky last season before the character died close to the end:

“It’s great to work with different people. I was working with Jon, too, at the end of last season, and now I’m sort of a floater. I don’t really have a specific person. I’ve been working with Atwater some this season and also with Jon. It’s interesting. Sometimes I feel like I don’t have a home, and that influences my character because I don’t have a safe space. Everyone else has a solid partnership.”

For those interested in some more One Chicago relationship news, Amy Morton told CarterMatt that, alas, there are no scenes featuring Platt and Mouch in the early going of season 6 — though maybe that will change in the stories later this year.
