So You Think You Can Dance season 16 renewal odds: Will it return?

Going into tonight’s finale, what are the chances of a So You Think You Can Dance season 16? Are we going to see it again?

At the moment, nothing is 100% clear, not that this should come as much of a surprise to anyone. The series routinely isn’t renewed for many months after the finale, and we don’t believe this year will be any different.

When it comes to its live+same-day ratings, it’s pretty clear at this moment that So You Think You Can Dance is far from a warrior — its numbers are, routinely, around the same in comparison to the rest of television. This year, season 15 is averaging live a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic — down around 9% versus season 14 last year. With slightly more than 2.7 million total viewers, however, it is up slightly this year. This just shows that the audience is there, but that it is also skewing a little bit older than it has in the past.

Personally, we think the show probably will return, mostly because this is a series that is both relatively inexpensive (at least compared to some other series out there) and also one that generates a great deal of awards-show attention for its routines. Fox doesn’t have a lot of shows elsewhere that can be counted on for Emmy love and we have a hard time thinking that they want to move away from that.

More than likely, we imagine that a firm decision will come on season 16 by February, mostly because there needs to be some time for auditions to happen — though Fox doesn’t need to give this show as much lead-up as they do some other reality shows, since they’ve got a pretty good sense at this point as to where to find talent. This show has such a firm audience at this point that trying to find it is not all that difficult.
