Will NCIS season 16 be the best Mark Harmon season yet?

Based on some of the early indications that are out there, it looks like NCIS season 16 is going to be a huge one — especially for Mark Harmon and his character of Gibbs.

Obviously, Gibbs has always been an integral part of the series, though the weight of his stories has fluctuated here and there over time. Yet, entering season 16 the show has to be a little bit more reliant on him for a few different reasons.

For starters, we are talking here about a character who is really on an island as the most tangible connection now to the early days of the show. Harmon and David McCallum are the only two original series regulars left and with David only appearing in a percentage of the show’s episodes now, it makes Gibbs all the more important. Sean Murray has basically been around long enough to be considered an original cast member, though he wasn’t in every single episode from the onset.

CBS clearly knows the importance of Gibbs to the show’s longevity, and with that in mind, they clearly have a number of different plans as to how he can shine.

1. More risk-taking on missions – That’s something that has been reported out there as a source of possible tension between him and the rest of the team. While we know that Gibbs has long advocated for a certain degree of order with this show, we are happy that the writers aren’t abandoning this aspect of the character during missions.

2. More of his romantic history, past and present – We know that there is some talk about bringing back some of Gibbs’ exes, and we’re absolutely excited to see what that looks like. Beyond that, we’re also intrigued to see what develops between him and Sloane — even if it doesn’t turn overtly romantic, the idea of the writers looking at this relationship is still something to be happy about. We are aware that Gibbs has rule #12 still in play but we like to think that people can change and we are rooting for him to grow.
