The Blacklist season 6 spotlight: What lies ahead for Dembe Zuma?

In today’s edition of our ongoing The Blacklist spotlight series, we’re putting the focus on a man in Dembe Zuma who we could always use more of. He’s one of the more mysterious guys on the show in that he isn’t always keen to tell his life story. Yet, he is also one of Raymond Reddington’s most-trusted associations and we don’t exactly see the world of the show working anywhere near as well without him.

Moving into season 6, we definitely do think there is a lot of intriguing story to tell with Dembe — especially with Reddington’s big secret in mind. We know that Dembe is one of the few people who has known about the imposter secret for some time, and he encouraged Reddington to even tell Liz Keen the truth. He had the foresight to know that the long that this secret simmered, the worse it would be for everyone. Yet, even still that was not enough to convince James Spader’s character to do anything.

What’s interesting at the moment is that Reddington still doesn’t know that Liz is aware of the secret, and we like to think that this throws yet another layer of intrigue into everything. Wouldn’t it be interesting if Dembe finds out that Liz knows, and has to be the one to relay that information to Reddington? What if Dembe and Liz have a secret alliance of their own? There are potentially other secrets that Dembe is holding onto, including with Katarina, that could come out over time.

Basically, we’re mostly just in the camp of wanting to see things get as messy as humanly possible with all of this.

Beyond the Reddington of it all, it would be nice to explore of Dembe’s family and his life before Reddington this season, since it would provide an even greater sense as to why he is so loyal to someone who, despite his positive qualities, certainly has a dark side. Dembe certainly is familiar with what happened to Mr. Kaplan, so we do wonder how much that is something that he constantly has on his mind as he goes about his business.

Remember, The Blacklist premieres in early 2019 on NBC — don’t buy into any premiere-date rumors otherwise.
