Last Week Tonight with John Oliver honors Burt Reynolds, talks Brett Kavanaugh

Last Week Tonight

After a couple of weeks off of the air, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver returned on Sunday and immediately took a quick second to tribute Burt Reynolds. It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but the actor’s face was present in the opening theme. This is certainly something that we’ve seen the show do with some other late, great people in the past.

Moving beyond the tribute, of course Oliver took on one of his favorite topics: The Donald Trump Administration, and also the NY Times op-ed that got him riled up from this past week. The problem that Oliver had with the show this week was just that there were so many different topics. It was hard to get all of it in! Take, for example, the Brett Kavanaugh hearings. There was a lot of talk around this over the past few days, and for a lot of different reasons — whether it be how seriously the conservative Senators were taking them to also Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s health. The media is spiraling with all sorts of speculation as to the future of the court, after all, and they are certainly getting a little ahead of themselves.

Of course, the problem with spotlighting the confirmation hearings is that, for so many people, it’s rather depressing. Also, it’s been so well-covered already — though we did like the discussion about term limits for judges. This is something that is relatively unique to America; no other major countries do it quite like America does, and it is questionable as to why the country continues to go this route.

(For those wondering, the “And Now, This” segment tonight focused primarily on weird summer traditions honored on the local news. We know how much Oliver loves to focus on this particular subject.
