Last Week Tonight with John Oliver discusses voting, convicted felons

Last Week Tonight

We’ve seen Last Week Tonight with John Oliver focus on prison reform in the past, and the focus was certainly planted on that again on Sunday night’s new episode.

The main focus tonight was voting through the lens of prisoners — in particular, convicted felons not having an opportunity to do so. On some occasions, this certainly does make a lot of sense. After all, there are certain convicted felons who really could jeopardize the voting process because they wouldn’t take the process seriously — also, some are murderers who are spending the rest of their lives in jail.

Yet, there are other a number of other convicted felons who have drug offenses and other crimes that are not on the same level, but for some of these people, trying to regain their voting rights is an almost-impossible task. In the state of Florida, for example, they have to go in front of a clemency board led by people (including Governor Rick Scott) who follow their own rules when it comes to what they want to do. This panel also only meets four times a year, and that does not give a lot of opportunity for people to get their voting rights back.

Obviously, many states are different and tonight was largely about Florida — still, it makes a lot of sense to put most of the focus on this particular state. After all, just think in these terms. This is the state that has a history of super-close voting results, and one where every person matters. This episode did get funnier and funnier as it went alone, especially when Oliver re-did his entire set in pink and bright colors in order to speak to Florida directly.
