Geoffrey Owens reportedly joins The Haves and Have Nots

Haves and Have Nots

The story of Geoffrey Owens looks to have a happy ending, and not just because of the encouragement he received online.

According to a report from TMZ, Owens is set to join Tyler Perry’s popular OWN series The Haves and Have Nots for the upcoming season, and beyond that, this is more than just a guest-starring role. He’s going to be around the show for ten episodes, which is a pretty meaty gig that will bring a lot more attention to his ability as an actor. This is something we speculated on earlier this week when Perry encouraged him to work with him on a popular series — The Haves and Have Nots was the show that made sense.

One of the misnomers with the Owens story, which first went viral after he was spotted working at a Trader Joe’s in order to make ends meet, was that he was not working as an actor. In reality, the Cosby Show alum has done gigs on Lucifer, Blue Bloods, Divorce, and was on the season 6 premiere of Elementary earlier this year. He did the Trader Joe’s job so that he could help support his career as an actor in between gigs. It’s a great story, and we’re glad to see that he’s getting back out there with a prominent role. We know that Owens was hesitant to take a role that he got just because of his viral fame, but we imagine that he and Perry had some great conversations about this before he agreed to take the job.

Basically, we have a feeling that Perry, as prolific a producer as they come, was more than familiar with Owens’ work long before his story went out there this past week. He’s probably the sort of actor he would want to bring in to begin with.
