The Walking Dead season 9 premiere run time extended
According to a report coming in via ComicBook.com, the upcoming season opener is going to run for a grand total of an hour and 26 minutes. That’s a fairly-long premiere, and one of the longest episodes that we’ve seen from the series.
Are we even remotely surprised by this? Not exactly, given that AMC has long followed the model of letting creators create and having episodes that run however long the parties involved need for them to. We’re seeing that this summer with both Better Call Saul as well as with new series Lodge 49, and we’ve certainly seen it with The Walking Dead in the past. We will say that there have been times that The Walking Dead has gone completely overboard with dragging on episodes far longer than they need to, but there have also been times in which the extended run time is necessary. This is a show with an enormous cast, and sometimes, you need more time in order to tell these stories so they don’t feel altogether rushed in the end.
On this particular occasion, we’re glad to have an extended The Walking Dead premiere for one reason more so than any other — this marks an opportunity in order to give us a little bit more in the way of Rick Grimes. Given that Andrew Lincoln is going to be leaving the AMC series at some point during the ninth season, we’ll take however much we can possibly get of him before he says farewell.
The Walking Dead season 7 will be formally kicking off on Sunday, October 7.
