9-1-1 season 2 spoilers: The impact of Maddie’s arrival

911 season 2

When 9-1-1 season 2 premieres on Fox, one of the things you’re going to recognize right away as new is the presence of Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie. She is the new call center operator, and one of the main point-of-view characters following the departure of Connie Britton as Abby. While it’s not clear if Abby will return at any point in the future (it doesn’t appear likely in at least the first handful of fall episodes), Maddie will be bringing a compelling story of her own — she’s been through a lot, including an abusive relationship, and she could be looking for a sense of healing in a new job and a new home closer to her brother Buck.

Ultimately, it does appear as though bringing Maddie on board is going to do a lot in terms of giving Buck some great material. In speaking on this subject more via Variety, executive producer Tim Minear had the following to say:

“Not only is the first time she’s seen Buck in a while, but the new man he’s become since meeting [Britton’s] Abby is in many ways wholly unrecognizable from the immature womanizing younger brother she remembers … Buck is still very much holding a torch for Abby, so Maddie will fill sort of an emotional void that’s been created there, in addition to also filling the open station of a 911-operator.”

Basically, bringing Maddie on board the show at this point is going to bring on board an exciting new dimension for the character, and one that we certainly do welcome with open arms. So long as the characters get great moments in the spotlight and the drama remains creative, we’re confident that 9-1-1 season 2 will match some of the greatness that we saw the first go-around.
