The Crown season 3 debate: When’s the best time for it to premiere?
For starters, it’s clear at this point that the premiere is still many months away. It’s not happening this year, a move initiated in part by the fact that the series had to recast the entirety of their roles. Tobias Menzies and Olivia Colman are now Philip and Elizabeth, and we’re glad that the series took the time in order to get the roles right. We know already that these two are outstanding performers more than capable of pulling these parts out.
So when’s the right time to launch it, beyond of course “as soon as possible”? If we had a preference, it would be to get season 3 at some point in March and April, following the crowded awards season so that the show gets a larger promotional platform. Also, for those of you who want to see Menzies and Colman get some Emmy nominations (which we’re personally all for), this is the perfect timing for it. So long as the show hits Netflix before the end of May, it should be eligible — and we can see it cleaning up on nominations when that happens. One of the interesting things about recasting The Crown is that it almost refreshes the show’s awards-show chances at the same time. That’s something that you don’t really see all that often, since typically it becomes harder for series to get those nominations as they get deeper into their run.
We’d say that by the time we get to the end of the year, that’s when you can start really looking out for some premiere-date news on The Crown. We do think that Netflix probably wants to get the news out there a few months in advance and this is plenty of time.
