Does Outlander season 4 need a big Roger – Bree promotional push?

Sophie Skelton

We’ve had a chance to see a reasonably large amount of Outlander season 4 promotional material now, and that includes the new key art. Is that exciting? Absolutely it is, given that it’s nice to see some of how the producers are interpreting the American setting and the story from Jamie and Claire moving forward.

If you haven’t seen the key art yet, we suggest that you head over here to check it out.

Now, we want to talk about the Roger and Bree of it all? Are we shocked that Richard Rankin and Sophie Skelton were not included in the art? Hardly, especially since they’ve been smaller characters on the TV series to date, and haven’t actually been seen since the episode “Freedom & Whisky.” We do think that Starz needs to cater most of their key arts towards some of the characters casual viewers are the most familiar with. In creating art focused around two characters, they keep things simple and accessible.

Yet, we are waiting to see how much more of a promotional push Roger and Bree are going to get elsewhere, whether it be showing footage (such as the scenes around the photo above) or Bree making the decision to go back in time. We do think that one of the reasons why Starz has been hesitant to show a lot of these characters to date is that they don’t want to give away much of Brianna’s story. For non-readers who aren’t familiar with the story, maybe the surprise is something that they will find appealing. Brianna meeting Jamie for the first time especially is one of the biggest moments that you’ll have a chance to see in season 4 and they certainly don’t want to give that away.

With that said, you can tease Bree’s story without getting to this point. While we don’t expect Starz to release a huge gallery of Roger / Bree photos or an extended trailer all about them, we wouldn’t be shocked if they get about twenty seconds or so in a two-minute trailer; or, we wouldn’t be surprised if they get a separate teaser of around fifteen seconds about them. It would help to give their story more attention, and also get show viewers prepared for the biggest story for them so far.

Moving into season 5, we expect an even larger push for the characters — after all, at that point show-only viewers are going to be more acquainted with them than ever before.
