Shameless season 9: William H. Macy on Emmy Rossum’s exit

Shameless season 9

We’ve already had a chance to hear from Emmy Rossum on her imminent departure from ShamelessNow, we’re also getting a chance to learn about William H. Macy’s thoughts on the subject.

Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Macy (who has starred with Rossum on the show from the beginning) made it clear that the cast has been prepared for her to say farewell given that she has so much else going on:

“We’ve been expecting it … I tell you, when you get to season 9 and you think of [whether] to keep going, it’s daunting. It’s hard not to think of: ‘What would my life be post-Shameless?’ And part of it is very frightening and part of it is very exciting. She’s young and I think she’s made the right choice. She’s got another show that she’s an executive producer on, so she’s going right into something and she wants to branch out. Plus, she just got married. I wish her well. I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do next.”

Macy’s statement certainly echoes much of what we’ve heard elsewhere, and that is that the cast does seem to be fairly interested in continuing forward with the show even after Rossum’s exit. There is, after all, no reason for them to tie things up given that commercially, the series is very successful. While we do wonder if the show can be the same, we do think that we’ve seen a few examples of series who have been able to withstand big cast changes. Homeland is a good example after Damian Lewis’ departure, and the same goes for Suits after losing Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams.
