Shameless season 9: Emmy Rossum discusses departure further
Of course, it’s always tempting to want more details, and we know in some corners of the internet there’s always a natural curiosity for something scandalous. Yet, at the end of the day it doesn’t seem as though the departure of Rossum from the series is anything worthy of tabloid headlines. It just seems as though she was ready to move forward and take on other challenges. She hasn’t addressed the reasoning for her exit directly, but it definitely feels like this was a warm, positive experience for her and she doesn’t have anything negative to say about it.

As a matter of fact, here is some of what she had to say on this particular subject to Entertainment Weekly in a new interview:
“I will never be saying goodbye to Fiona … Fiona is a part of me and has been like every character is a part of you and you are a little bit part of them. My Shameless family is really my second family and I’ve spent so much time with them — 10,000 hours — that it really feels like we’ve all grown up together. I started on the show when I was 23 and now I’m not. [Laughs.] And it’s a wonderful, wonderful amount of time and I feel incredibly proud of everything we have created. I’m just filled with gratitude for everyone’s hard work.”
Show creator John Wells has already made it clear that he would bring Rossum back at any point she wants to come back, and it does seem as though everyone, Rossum included, is interested in continuing the show even without her. While we’re not sure how it will work, it does feel like Suits is setting a great standard that it can work to continue a show after losing beloved cast members.
