We know that there have been many people out there hoping to see Iris West the journalist come out more on The Flash season 5. Luckily, the good news here is that this story is set to rise to the forefront.
Speaking to TVLine in a new interview, show executive producer Todd Helbing noted that the writers are planning to build up Iris’ story — that way, they can eventually get back towards the headlines that we’ve seen in the future from the beginning of the season:
“[The paper] hasn’t officially been named yet, [but Iris is] going to do more journalism [in Season 5] than we’ve seen in quite a while, which is fun — to get Iris out on the streets again … The whole idea is that we want to slowly build [her blog] into the Citizen, and she’s running this paper that we’ve seen since Day 1.”

We know on some level why the writers moved away somewhat from Iris and her journalism story, mostly in that they wanted to figure out a way to integrate her more with the other characters. Having her be team leader at STAR Labs is a good way to do that, and doing journalism sometimes can be somewhat isolating — especially when so many other characters do not share in that profession and are trying to keep things secret.
Yet, with that being said we do think that there is a good chance that Iris can do both and the writers can find a way to give her both her own journalism story and then also have her work alongside the team. The character deserves that, in between all of this and the arrival of Nora West-Allen in the present-day timeline, this could be the most eventful season for Candice Patton that we’ve had a chance to see yet.
