Following the launch of season 2 on Friday, is an Ozark season 3 renewal likely at Netflix? Is it something that we should expect?
At the moment, it feels reasonable to feel confident in the future of the Jason Bateman – Netflix drama for a number of reasons, starting with the fact that the show’s first season was very popular and also was the subject of awards consideration. Netflix wants shows that are successful, but the challenge from the outside looking in there is trying to figure out just how we can gauge that since Netflix often doesn’t release their statistics. Yet, as we explain in the video below (subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more), one of the most important things that the streaming service looks for in renewing shows is retention and completion. They want to know that viewers are checking out full seasons of their shows. With Ozark, we don’t think that is going to be an issue.
Also, Netflix does view nominations and the like as a source of extra publicity for their series. If Ozark is going to make Jason Bateman an awards contender they have to keep bringing these engaging stories. They tend to give shows with awards-show clout some time to build an audience and to tell a strong story. For now, Ozark feels like the sort of show that is going to eventually build towards an ever growing audience much like Breaking Bad did with it’s first two seasons. The only thing it has going against it is True Detective season 3, a show that is going to potentially corner the market on crime mysteries set in the same region. (Technically, Ozark does not actually film primarily in the Ozarks.) Still, we like to think there is room for both and Ozark will already have an established audience at that point.
If Netflix does want to renew Ozark, expect an announcement within the next few months. There’s no immediate hurry.
