Doctor Who season 11 spoilers: All about the element of surprise
There is a reason why things have been under such a heavy lock and key, and it seems to be very much this: The intention here is for there to be big secrets and surprises. A big part of what Doctor Who is as a series is a journey through imagination. Regardless of if you are eight years old or eighty, there should be something that appeals to you and something that you don’t see coming. If you had an influx of details ahead of time, this just wouldn’t be possible.
In speaking on this subject further via Doctor Who Magazine, novelist and season 11 writer Malorie Blackman had the following to say on the subject:
“Part of the joy of writing for Doctor Who is to try to surprise your audience, no matter what their age … I love unpredictability – where you introduce the unexpected, even into a story the audience may already think they know.”
We don’t know too much about Blackman’s episode in advance, but one of the things that we do like about the writing staff as a whole this season is that they are a diverse group of people with a wide array of writing experience. One of the great things about the show is that it does offer things up to different voices who have not been heard that much, especially when it comes to the medium of television. While it’s too early to tell if this season will be top-notch or not, there are many reasons for optimism at present.
