The Crown season 3 spoilers: First photo featuring Tobias Menzies!
The photo above was posted by the show earlier today, and it features the Outlander actor bearing a striking resemblance to Prince Philip. He has been working on the series for many months now leading up to its premiere in the new year, and this is potentially poised to be a breakout role for him after having also done parts on The Terror, Rome, Game of Thrones, and many other series.

For those unaware, Menzies is replacing Matt Smith in the role of Prince Philip, and this is all just a part of what Netflix and executive producer Peter Morgan had planned out when it comes to The Crown in the long-term. Each season is meant to be representative of a specific period of Queen Elizabeth’s life, and seasons 3 and 4 are going to focus on this middle period. Olivia Colman is playing the new version of Elizabeth after Claire Foy handled it for the first two seasons; these roles will be recast again going into the fifth and sixth season, provided that the series lasts as long as it is originally planned (and with all of the critical acclaim and legions of fans we have no reason to believe that it son’t continue).
We are currently in the midst of the longest hiatus that we have seen when it comes to The Crown, which is something brought on most likely due to the recastings and the time needed in order to ensure that the series is both accurate and also as good as it can possibly be. This is a series that has won countless awards, and while that is a nice testament to all of the work everyone has put in, it’s also a reminder of some of the pressure that comes to deliver the best show possible.
Given that the series does have an excellent actor on board in Tobias, we’re more than optimistic about the future. if you’re not familiar with his other work we suggest diving into season 1 of Outlander for your first taste – he is beautifully terrifying!
