Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight? Unfortunate timing
Just think for a moment about the sheer number of super-notable things that have happened over the past several days when it comes to the Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort cases. Also, think about the immunity deals and all of the chaos that is stewing throughout the Trump Administration. This is the sort of thing that Oliver would have a field day with! It’s a part of the “Stupid Watergate” operation that we’ve been building towards for a rather-long time now.
Unfortunately, there is no new episode of Last Week Tonight coming this week, largely because of a planned hiatus that takes the show from now until September 9. We’re sure that on some level, there were probably some people in production who wish that they had pieced together a show at the last minute, but the television world doesn’t work that way.
As we explain in the recent video below (subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more), Last Week Tonight doesn’t work the same way that many other late-night shows do. This one requires extensive research, writing, and fact-checking since so many of its stories are based on information and reporting. It may not be journalism per se, but it needs to have its ducks in a row in order to do the best job possible. Assembling all of this is not something that comes easily. It takes an extreme amount of time and effort, and with that, there are only so many episodes ordered in a year and the schedule is mapped out far in advance so that the crew know when to work and when they get a breather. Even during the hiatuses, though, the crew does still continue to work — it’s not like the officers are just closed during the time the show is off the air.
When Last Week Tonight does return, we imagine that there will be plenty of opportunities to talk about these headlines and so much more then.
