The Innocents season 2 renewal: Could it happen at Netflix?

The Innocents season 2

Following its big premiere this weekend, could The Innocents season 2 happen at Netflix? Is this something that we really should root for?

On the surface, it’s easy to see why there would be a legion of people who want to see the show back. The Innocents is a shape-shifting drama geared towards a pretty wide audience. While it does have supernatural / science fiction appeal, we do think at the end of the day the show is very much about characters and relationships. That is going to be at the center of almost everything in the event we do see a series get a second season — which we firmly believe it could.

Based on the cliffhanger, we almost certainly think that the demand is going to be there!

Going into season 1, we’re not going to say that The Innocents was the most-promoted series that we’ve seen on Netflix over the past year. It didn’t get a huge cavalcade of buzz, but even over the weekend we have started to see it pick up a little bit of steam and attention. For Netflix, though, it’s all about staying power — it needs to have shows that can stay in the spotlight for at least a few weeks. Part of the big problem with the binge-watching model is that so many of their shows can easily be flash-in-a-pan. You watch them, you forget about them, and then you move on to the next one.

When it comes to The Innocents, one of the things that is going to benefit it heavily is that cliffhanger. While it may not have been much of a guarantee that the show was going to be coming back for another season when the first season was made, the producers bet on themselves and created an ending that would set up a potential season 2 down the line.
