Game of Thrones season 8 premiere date may not be until June
Speaking in a new interview with The Huffington Post, visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer strongly indicated that we’re going to be waiting a while to see the final season, as he made it clear that it would not be eligible for the Primetime Emmys presumably for two more years. Typically, the Emmys have a cutoff date of around May 31 for the current year. With that in mind, season 8 would be eligible for the 2019 show if it aired at some point before May 31 of next year.
However, Bauer’s comments are a strong indicator that this is not happening. Remember here that the series could premiere in June and still meet HBO’s previous expectation that the final season would premiere within the first half of 2019. Bauer also made it clear that the amount of special-effects work is going to be keeping the series in post-production for quite some time:
“We’re going to be toiling away on Season 8 until May of 2019, so it’s eight or nine months away … But the prequel is starting to shoot in February, at least the pilot. So we’ll still have quite a lot to do on Season 8 when they’re beginning.”
When you hear all of this, the June premiere date makes all the more sense, given that you don’t want to start releasing episodes of Game of Thrones until the effects are complete. With this in mind, we’re also adjusting our HBO expectations for 2019 so that True Detective season 3 and Big Little Lies season 2 are going to premiere prior to it coming on. (We also think that the earliest we can expect the prequel is summer 2020, given that HBO wouldn’t want it and Game of Thrones season 8 to be Emmy eligible in the same year.)
The basic way to sum all of this up is that if you love these series, be prepared to wait a while.
