The Affair season 5: How to wrap up Cole, Helen, and Noah’s story

The Affair season 4 episode 4

As we get closer to The Affair season 5, what should we see for Cole, Helen, and Noah? That is at the heart of this particular feature on the series.

Going into this article (and accompanying video — watch below, subscribe for more, and check out our playlist), what we’re going to do is offer up some thoughts on what should lie ahead for our three central characters moving forward. Note that we’re entering season 5 with the assumption that Vik dies, mostly because it’s so hard to imagine him finding a way to survive some of the turmoil that he went through at the end of the fourth season.

Cole – He needs to find happiness with himself. What that includes is finding a way to stabilize his career, be a good parent to Joanie, and also understand more who he is as a human. He also needs to learn to let go of the grief and the regret that he feels regarding Alison’s death; it was clear in the finale that he was hurting more than anyone over her death, feeling as though she was a great love of his life that got away and he was intent on winning her back.

Unfortunately, he is now on an emotional island. For now, he needs to learn to take care of himself before he figures out how to take care of others.

Noah – For Noah, we feel differently about where he is in life, at least in that he’s already found a good bit of career success for himself as an author and he doesn’t really need to focus on that. We actually think that he is more equipped for a long-term relationship, provided that he takes it as an inspiration to better all of his life. If he can show the same amount of care for his own kids that he did for Anton, that will certainly be a start. In general, we think that Noah needs to find his happiness through his family, something that hasn’t been anywhere near as present consistently in his life as it should be..

Helen – Finally, Helen needs to find happiness through what could be her real calling: Helping others. We think that her trip to Joshua Tree unlocked some sort of greater wisdom in her that she really can use her life experience to become someone who gives to others and is able to take more satisfaction because of that. We’d like to see her go on a journey in season 5 where she takes her imperfections and finds a way to inspire others through them. Her life is never going to be perfect, but we want to see her find some joy through this work — and maybe a future love will come through that.
