Outlander notes: Season 5 work, more costume discussion

Outlander season 4

This morning’s Outlander notes is interesting in that we’re not talking about season 4, the one actually premiering in almost two months. Instead, we’re looking back to season 3 and also looking ahead to season 5.

Let’s kick things off here with the season 5 portion of the story, since work is currently being done on it behind the scenes! This was confirmed by executive producer Matthew B. Roberts in a post on Twitter, though many of you may have already known this. The writers and producers have to get new episodes together so that when filming begins in February, there are no interruptions because of scripts not being complete. This is something we also had confirmation on from CarterMatt co-owner Jessica Carter as her cousin is an Outlander staff writer for season 5 and we know that they are back to work.

As for some other things that need to be done before filming, costumes have to be made, sets have to be built, and of course roles need to be cast and new locations have to be found. All of this helps to make it clear why work on Outlander is a year-round job even if filming only lasts for so long.

A new discussion about costumes

There’s a great discussion with Emmy-nominated costume designer Terry Dresbach over at Syfy Wire, one that goes into the process of making Claire’s famous “batsuit” outfit and also the challenge that comes with not only creating 18th-century costumes, but also how a 20th-century woman would create one that was both period-appropriate, but also practical.

To go along with this Dresbach also admits in the interview that she didn’t anticipate a nomination for season 3:

“I told everybody on my team that we’d never get a nomination this season … Season 2 was a feast for the eyes, and I knew in Season 3 all of that was going away, and the audience would go through one hell of a letdown.”
