The Affair season 4 finale: Are Joshua Jackson, entire cast Emmy contenders?

The Affair season 4

Following The Affair season 4 finale on Showtime, we are of course left feeling very much like we’ve just witnessed an exceptional hour of television. Beyond that, though, we are starting to look ahead already to the 2019 Emmy race.

Because of the way in which awards-show eligibility works, the cast of The Affair is not going to be up for nominations this year — those, after all, have already been announced. Yet, they will and should be up for consideration moving into the next campaign for the awards show next summer.

Can you make a case easily for Joshua Jackson, Maura Tierney, Ruth Wilson, and Dominic west as contenders next year? We certainly think so, especially after the performances of the past three episodes alone. We would probably put Jackson at the top of his category for his work at Cole this season, largely because it brought so many different dimensions to the series: Introspection, pain, longing, and regret. His performance was both physical and emotional, as he was left to cope not only with the loss of someone he loved dearly, but also the fact that he didn’t express it to her enough.

Tierney, meanwhile, was equally outstanding in the finale as she made sure that Helen’s heartbreak was real, nuanced, and not just overdramatic due to circumstance. It was the perfect exercise both in pain and restraint, and her interplay with many other actors remains top-notch.

The Affair has in the past been the subject of some awards-show buzz, especially back after season 1 with the Golden Globes. Yet, somehow it has started to become more of an under-the-radar show over the past few years. Now does seem to be the time for it to rise back to the forefront, and with the performances we saw this summer, it absolutely merits it. While Jackson and Tierney may stand out the most here to us, we could easily make a case for all four actors — and that’s without even mentioning some other great ones across the board, including a breakout performance from Christopher Meyer as Anton.
