The Flash season 5 debate: Should Shantel VanSanten return as Patty Spivot?
So why is Patty gone? A big part of it comes via what her original function on the story was — to present Barry Allen with a romantic alternative to Iris West and to give the CCPD a valuable person on the force. She spent a lot of time working with Joe and, in turn, Barry, but she eventually left in order to get proper training as a CSI.
Yet, this is where things get interesting — technically, Central City does need a new CSI given what happened to Barry last season. Meanwhile, VanSanten’s recent series in Shooter was canceled after three seasons on the air. If she wants to come back for an episode or even an arc, we do think that it could prove interesting. She knows that Barry is The Flash, for starters, and that could prove valuable. Also, it’d be great to see another reminder that people can be friendly after a breakup without there being any remaining romantic intrigue. Barry is with Iris now and that’s not going to change. However, Patty could function as a friend to him and if you want her to be a love interest for someone else, couldn’t that happen with Ralph or someone else? It’s not exactly canon to the comics, but we also wouldn’t rule that out, either.
