Why America’s Got Talent brings in acts from other countries, shows

America's Got Talent

It’s a bit of a tradition at this point — viewers complaining about certain America’s Got Talent contestants having a certain amount of pre-show fame. Often it happens to singers, magic-act, or variety performers who have done other iterations of the show across the world. Or, at times it hits contestants who have done similar talent competitions.

Just out of the remaining performers, there are a number of them with substantial experience elsewhere. Courtney Hadwin appeared on The Voice Kids in the UK, Amanda Mena appeared on a similar program in North America, and The Sacred Riana and Aaron Crow are just two of the contestants this season with experience across the Got Talent franchise. These two acts in particular delivered performances that were fairly similar to what they’ve done in the past.

So why does AGT continue to use acts with international followings and TV experience? We think a lot of it just happens to do with their desire to have top-tier talent on the shows. It’s a lot harder to find unique talent in 2018 than in the past, especially when you start looking beyond just singers and dancers. For vocalists, finding great ones can be hard since American Idol and The Voice tend to get the bulk of the applicants aged 15-29. AGT has a leg up in that they can find performers from around the world and also ones who are younger.

In the earlier years of America’s Got Talent, there was more of a focus on more “undiscovered” talent, and while many of those acts were memorable at the time, they failed to make much of a substantial impression after the show. Many winners, such as Kevin Skinner and Michael Grimm, were mostly forgotten about in the months following their wins. There really wasn’t any talent at all that was well-remembered for several seasons. We’d argue that following Terry Fator’s win in season 2, there was a dark period that lasted a few years. AGT has gotten better now at finding acts with more staying power, just as they’ve also done a better job of nurturing their talent and finding ways to promote them after the show better.

Ultimately, we just think of AGT as an entertainment show where really, it’s all about what you do in the moment more so than what you do before. We also do think that some of this controversy is overblown. The majority of viewers, despite what it may seem like on the internet, don’t know anything about a contestant’s prior performing history. We also don’t know how much they would care if they dod.
