Snowfall season 3 renewal: Should it be a given at FX?

Snowfall season 2

We’re a handful of episodes into Snowfall season 2, but that certainly isn’t stopping us from thinking about a season 3 already. After all, doesn’t this have to be one of the biggest no-brainer decisions that the folks over at FX have?

On the surface, it would certainly seem as though that is the case. For a little more information on that, all you have to do is look at the moment at the ratings. To date, the drama is averaging a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then also around 975,000 total viewers. This is about equal in both measures to what the show was pulling in for the first season.

By and large, the majority of cable / network shows out there lose at least 10% of their live viewership from one year to the next. Any show that starts off with solid ratings and can retain them has to be thought of as a big winner … let alone one that also has a devoted following and is well-received like Snowfall is. Another thing to remember here is that we’re not even counting in this discussion ratings from DVR playback or streaming. FX actually looks mostly at live+3 ratings as their most-important measure. They want to see people who are watching live, but also who is watching in the days that follow.

What makes all of this the more impressive for Snowfall is that it is finding a way to be fairly successful in the summer, a time that is not always the easiest for shows to find success in. There are so many problems, after all, that can hamper a show, including the warmer climate, big-budget movies, or a general desire for viewers to do things that don’t involve sitting around at home while the weather is good.

While nothing is confirmed, we feel fairly confident that we’ll hear something about a Snowfall season 3 over the next month or two.
