Wynonna Earp season 3 episode 5 review: Zoie Palmer shines as Jolene
In this episode Palmer played the title character, a demon desperate to destroy Waverly who was emotionally manipulative like nobody’s business. What the character could do to people was both striking and terrifying — thanks to the power of her tasty treats, she could cause people to think whatever she really wanted. At first, Jolene was being super-loving and caring towards right about everyone; yet, when suspicions started to raise, things started to get a little bit more chaotic. Jolene made it her mission to hurt almost everyone, especially Waverly, and not always physically. Instead, she chose to do so in some ways emotionally. She threw a wrench into Waverly and Nicole’s relationship, brainwashed Nicole in order to arrest Wynonna and Michelle, and also sang chaotic karaoke while causing a bar fight.
Then, Jolene also tried to seduce Nicole, but luckily, right around that time she started to wake up. It was at that point Haught discovered the truth about who Jolene really was … not that it helped her all that much right away. This was more of a team effort trying to take her out and, when we got to the final showdown, it was pretty darn awesome. They realized that Jolene was the demon, and also that she was the person who’d been haunting Jolene for the better part of the past couple of decades.
In the end, the demon was defeated … but Jolene is far from the only problem given that Bulshar is still out there. At least now Wayhaught can get on the same page again.
The aftermath of Jolene
Following her defeat, everyone of course had a chance to reconvene. Waverly and Nicole were feeling a little bit better, but we have a feeling that Bulshar’s ring (which kept Nicole temporarily safe from Jolene) will be a big plot point sooner or later … how about now?
At the end of the episode, we saw Doc giving himself an epic rant towards Bulshar, making it clear that he was going to do whatever he could to take him on. There was no deal, and he was prepared to drag him to hell if need be.
As for Wynonna, she concluded her part of the story learning some surprising news: Waverly’s father is supposedly Julian, and “honest-to-god” angel! Well, let’s see about that…
CarterMatt Verdict
Wynonna Earp season 3 episode 5 was a gem. This was action-packed, intense, and completely owned by Zoie Palmer. It’s a shame that the Jolene character is gone already since she brought such an incredible presence to the show. Sure, we hate her immensely for what she did to Waverly and others, but isn’t that a big part of being a great villain. You want to inspire this sort of hatred!
