HBO officially orders Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen to series
Today, HBO officially gave a green light to ten episodes of the series, which is meant to be a new story set within the world of the noteworthy comic rather than a direct re-telling of the original or the feature film. Jeremy Irons, Regina King, Tim Blake Nelson, Don Johnson, and Louis Gossett Jr. make up some of what is an extremely star-studded cast, and as of right now it appears that the first season will be ready for 2019. That is the reason for the graphic above.
What we do wonder at the moment about HBO is how they’re going to schedule everything in, given that we’ve got next year Big Little Lies, True Detective, Game of Thrones, and now this. Our feeling, at least at the moment, is that we’ll probably see this in the fall of next year, mostly because nothing more than a pilot has been filmed at the moment and the network is going to need a little bit of time in order to get everything else together.
Obviously, it goes without saying that expectations are high for this new version of the story, mostly because the original Watchmen is beloved and there are plenty of people out there who don’t quite think that the movie version really holds a candle to the original. Lindelof is a brilliant writer, but one who regrettably still takes grief for a Lost series finale that is, at least in our mind, grossly underrated. (There was never a way to please everyone with that show.) He also worked with Tom Perrotta on The Leftovers, a series that delivered a fantastic couple of seasons after season 1 sputtered a little bit out of the gate.
